Where to Stay
Sleep in the blue village, walk to the train.
Stay in Sidi Bou Said if you can. The village sits about 6 minutes by road above the Carthage ruins on Byrsa Hill, its TGM station runs down the line to the Tophet and the Antonine Baths, and you are already there for the sunset when the coaches leave. La Marsa, 5 minutes further up the coast, is the alternative with beach hotels, bigger rooms and parking. Stay in the Tunis Medina if the medina, the Bardo or the budget matter more; it is 15 to 20 minutes from the ruins and the full-day tours start there. Les Berges du Lac, 4 km from the airport, is the base for a late landing or an early flight. The catch in the village: the old houses we checked list no parking, and rooms are few.

The ruins have no single gate: Byrsa Hill, the Punic Ports, the Tophet and the Antonine Baths are spread across the suburb, which is why a base on the TGM line matters. Faika Travel Services’ Carthage and Sidi Bou Said Tour and Le Lemon Tour’s walking tour both meet in Carthage near Salammbo, with no pickup, so you make your own way there. The private day trips by Simba Fun Travel, Didon Tours and Chachia Tours collect from your hotel anywhere in Tunis and the coastal suburbs.
This is the base for anyone who wants the blue-and-white lanes without the crowds. Day-trippers arrive mid-morning and are gone by evening, and the cafés above the gulf are yours for the sunset. The trade-offs are a small stock of rooms, steep cobbled lanes with luggage, and no parking at the old houses we checked, so leave the car in La Marsa or come by taxi.
Hôtel Bou Fares (budget) is the value pick: breakfast included, free parking on site and Sidi Bou Said Beach a 10-minute walk, per the listing. Dar Fatma (mid-range) lists a rooftop pool with a view and breakfast included, and no parking. Dar Said (upper) overlooks the Gulf of Tunis with an outdoor pool and a hammam, breakfast included, no parking. La Villa Bleue (luxury) has an outdoor pool, a spa and free public parking nearby. See all stays in Sidi Bou Said.
Carthage itself is a leafy residential suburb with the archaeological sites set between the villas. You can walk to Byrsa Hill and take the train to the rest, and the evenings are quiet; the restaurants are in Sidi Bou Said and La Marsa, a short taxi or train ride away. Few hotels operate here, so book early for spring.
Hotel Villa Didon Carthage (upper) lists 550 metres to the Carthage National Museum on Byrsa Hill, free parking and continental breakfast included. Au bout du jardin (mid-range) is a guest house with a garden and free parking, 13 minutes’ walk from Salambo Beach; it showed no rooms for our April dates, which says something about the supply. See all stays in Carthage.
La Marsa is a seaside town at the end of the TGM line, with a corniche, a beach and its own restaurants, 5 minutes by road from Sidi Bou Said. Gammarth, further north, is where the big resort hotels are: pools, beach and parking, but 12 minutes or more from the ruins and off the train line. Families and anyone driving will find it easier than the village.
Mövenpick Hotel Gammarth Tunis (upper) lists two pools and free private parking. The Residence Tunis (luxury) lists two pools, free private parking and 5 km to both Carthage and Sidi Bou Said; it showed no rooms for our April dates. Four Seasons Hotel Tunis (luxury) has two pools, but its fine print says the outdoor pool and the beach close for the winter season from October to May, so check before a spring booking. See all stays in La Marsa or in Gammarth.
Stay in the old city if Carthage is one day of several in Tunis. The medina’s courtyard houses are among the best-reviewed rooms in the region, the souks and the Zitouna Mosque are outside the door, and the full-day tours by Didon Tours and others begin here. The ruins are 15 to 20 minutes away by road, or a walk to Tunis Marine and about half an hour on the TGM. Cars cannot reach most medina lanes, and both houses below list no parking.
Dar Ben Gacem (mid-range) is a traditional house with a terrace over the city, breakfast included. Dar El Jeld Hotel and Spa (upper) has a spa and a restaurant; some of its rates include breakfast and others charge US$15. See all stays in Tunis.
The lakeside business district sits between the airport and the coast. Novotel and Mövenpick both list 4 km to Tunis–Carthage Airport, about 5 to 10 minutes by road, and the ruins are 10 to 15 minutes the other way, closer than from the medina. It has no village life and no train, but for a late landing or an early flight it is better than a taxi across the city at night.
Novotel Tunis Lac (mid-range) lists a year-round outdoor pool and free private parking. Mövenpick Hotel du Lac Tunis (upper) lists an indoor pool, free private parking and a paid shuttle. See all stays in Les Berges du Lac.
Landing in the evening, one night here and a morning move to Sidi Bou Said costs very little time, since the village is about 15 to 20 minutes from the airport. For a flight before 9am, sleep here or in La Marsa rather than in the medina.
Many visitors see Carthage from a Hammamet resort, and most of the big group tours collect there. It works for one day out: the drive is a little over an hour each way in free-flowing traffic, and a shared tour’s pickup round adds to that. It does not work for seeing the village at sunset or for a second visit to the ruins. See all stays in Hammamet, and compare the tours from Hammamet.
For three nights or more, yes, if you want both the medina and the coast. Spend the first nights in the Tunis Medina for the souks and the Bardo, then move to Sidi Bou Said or La Marsa for Carthage and the sunsets; the move is a 20-minute taxi. Finish on the coast, since it is 15 to 20 minutes from the airport, not much further than the medina. For one or two nights, do not split: the move costs a morning, and either base reaches the other in under half an hour. A beach week in Hammamet with one Carthage day is the case where a single base works best.
The map is centred on Sidi Bou Said; zoom out for Tunis, Les Berges du Lac and Hammamet. Prices update for the dates you pick.
Book the tour first, then the room. The Tunis VIP Private Day Trip cancels free up to 24 hours ahead, so it can be held while you settle the hotel; every hotel we priced for April also offered a free-cancellation rate. Spring is the season to plan around: the best-time guide picks May, with April and October close behind, and the small village houses fill first.
You do not need a car. The TGM runs from Tunis Marine through Carthage and Sidi Bou Said to La Marsa for well under a dinar, until around one at night (how the train works). Driving is only an asset in La Marsa, Gammarth or Les Berges du Lac, where the hotels list free parking. If you choose the Bardo as the fourth stop of a day trip, it is closed on Mondays. Cruise passengers at La Goulette cannot book the VIP day trip; read the cruise-port guide instead.
Booking.com showed no resort fees for these hotels. The extras that vary are breakfast and parking.

Read on 27 October 2026 for a 14–15 April 2027 stay, two adults. Every rate carried Booking.com’s line “Additional charges may apply”, so ask whether the local tourist tax is collected at check-out. The Residence Tunis and Au bout du jardin showed no rooms for those dates and are not in the table. Our arithmetic: two nights at Hôtel Bou Fares come to $228 before taxes, with breakfast and parking included; two nights at Mövenpick Gammarth on its lowest rate come to $486, or $542 if that rate leaves out breakfast for one person at $28 a morning.

When the room is sorted
A private car and driver-host collects you from your address in Tunis, La Marsa or Gammarth for Carthage, Sidi Bou Said and the medina or the Bardo. Rated 4.7 from 873 reviews, free cancellation up to 24 hours ahead.
Which area, which hotel style, and what the listings say about parking and breakfast.
In Sidi Bou Said, or in La Marsa just up the coast. From the village the Carthage ruins on Byrsa Hill are about 6 minutes by road, and the TGM station puts the Tophet and the Antonine Baths a few stops away. You walk back to your room after the day-trippers leave. See the [area table](#comparison) for the drive times from each base.
Yes, if you also want the medina, the Bardo or a cheaper room. Central Tunis is about 17 to 20 minutes from the ruins by road in free-flowing traffic, and the TGM leaves from Tunis Marine at the end of Avenue Habib Bourguiba. Most full-day tours start in the medina anyway. The trade-off is evenings: the village sunset means a train or taxi back. [Tunis Medina section](#tunis-medina).
Sidi Bou Said for the village at night and a short walk to the cafés; La Marsa for the beach, bigger hotels and parking. The two are about 5 minutes apart by road and on the same TGM line, so the choice is about the room, not the sightseeing. The village houses we checked list no parking. [Compare the two](#la-marsa-gammarth).
Gammarth if you want a beach resort for a few days; Les Berges du Lac if you land late or leave early. Novotel Tunis Lac and Mövenpick du Lac list 4 km to the airport, against 21 minutes from Gammarth. Gammarth is about 12 minutes from the ruins, Les Berges du Lac about 11. Note that the Four Seasons lists its outdoor pool and beach as closed from October to May. [Airport section](#berges-du-lac).
Hammamet, Sousse or Monastir, unless you came for the beach and Carthage is one day out. Hammamet is a little over an hour from the ruins each way in free-flowing traffic, and a shared tour's pickup round adds to that. From Sousse the drive is closer to two hours each way. If you base yourself there, book a tour with hotel pickup rather than going on your own. [Hammamet section](#hammamet).
The sea, yes: Dar Said describes itself as overlooking the Gulf of Tunis, with an outdoor pool, and Dar Fatma lists a rooftop pool with a view. The ruins are scattered across a residential suburb below the hill, so no hotel looks over all of them. Villa Didon in Carthage lists 550 metres to the National Museum on Byrsa Hill, the closest of the hotels we checked. [See the three picks](#picks).
