Not everyone wants the ruins. This half-day does Sidi Bou Said alone: a hotel transfer from Hammamet or Yasmine Hammamet, two hours in the village, and back. Sidi Bou Said is a hill village of whitewashed walls, cobbled lanes and studded blue doors whose Andalusian ironwork and nail patterns are the thing people photograph. Bougainvillea grows over the walls in half a dozen colours, and the panorama over the Gulf of Tunis from the top of the village is genuinely one of the best views in the country. The local ritual is mint tea with pine nuts and a bambalouni — the sugared doughnut sold hot at the bottom of the main street.

Two hours is the working figure, and it suits the place: Sidi Bou Said is small, and past a couple of hours you are mostly repeating streets. The transfer is included but food and drink are not.
