How a Private Day Works

Pickup at your address, four stops, and the order is yours.

  1. Pick Your Departure Point

Tours run from Tunis, Hammamet, Yasmine Hammamet, Sousse, Monastir and the La Goulette cruise terminal. The further out you start, the more of the day goes on the road — budget an hour each way from Hammamet, closer to two from Sousse.

  2. Get Collected at Your Hotel

Almost every operator here includes hotel pickup, and most send the exact time by WhatsApp the evening before. Cruise passengers are the exception — check the listing, because some tours refuse port pickups outright.

  3. Walk Carthage With a Guide

The ruins are spread across several fenced sites, so a guide and a vehicle save real time. Expect the Antonine Baths, Byrsa Hill and usually the Punic ports or the Tophet. Check whether the entry ticket is included — many listings leave it out.

  4. Finish in the Blue Village

Sidi Bou Said sits about ten minutes up the coast. Most tours give an hour or two of free time for the cobbled lanes, the studded blue doors and a mint tea with pine nuts on a terrace above the Gulf of Tunis.

Private, and What It Costs

Private Is Cheaper Here Than the Word Suggests

Some listings price per person and fall with group size; others price per vehicle. The difference is large.

The instinct is that private means expensive. On this route it frequently does not, and the reason is how the operators price it.

Per person, or per vehicle

Read this before comparing anything. Two pricing models run side by side in this catalogue.

Per person, falling with group size. The tour featured here is quoted per person, not per vehicle: $26 each, getting cheaper as more people share the car. Four travellers can end up paying close to shared-coach rates each, with a private vehicle and a driver-host to themselves.

Per group, for a fixed vehicle. A seven-hour tour with a licensed guide throughout is $237 for a group of up to three, which is about $79 a head. Another sits at $162 for up to four. The headline number looks alarming next to a $22 shared van until you divide it.

The practical advice: work out the per-head figure for your actual party before ruling anything out. Two solo travellers and a family of four should reach different conclusions from the same list.

What a private car actually removes

The pickup circuit. A shared van collects from four or five hotels before it leaves, which on the Hammamet strip can absorb forty minutes before you have gone anywhere. A private vehicle collects from yours.

That is frequently the difference between a nine-hour day and a six-hour one covering the same ground — the six-hour private day trip does the medina, Carthage and Sidi Bou Said with lunch and site entry included, and it is six hours precisely because nobody else is being collected.

Driver-host or licensed guide

This is the distinction that matters most, and the listings are usually explicit about it.

A driver-host drives, gives local context and practical tips at each stop, and handles the logistics. Several listings state plainly that this is not a deep historical commentary. That is honest, and for Sidi Bou Said and the medina it is entirely sufficient.

A licensed guide is accredited and walks the sites with you. At Carthage the difference is real: the Romans levelled the Punic city in 146 BC and built over it, so what survives is two cities layered on one another, heavily ruined and thinly signed. The seven-hour private tour is the only listing here with an accredited guide beside you all day.

What private tours usually exclude

Entry tickets, most of the time. One operator quotes roughly €4.50 per person per site and includes it only for children aged ten and under. Budget around 30 dinars a head for the Carthage pass and the same again for the Bardo if it is on your itinerary.

Lunch is usually excluded too, sometimes deliberately: a fixed restaurant stop costs an hour that the itinerary would rather spend on the sites. Most operators will recommend somewhere if you ask.

The small print worth reading

The best-rated private listing here promises no commercial stops and no mandatory visits, which on a Tunisian day tour is a substantive commitment rather than marketing. It also throws in a stop at La Marsa, the seaside suburb past Sidi Bou Said, at no charge.

One restriction to check: the most-booked private tour in the catalogue refuses cruise bookings and will not collect from outside La Goulette port. If you are arriving by ship, pick a listing that names the port among its pickup points.

"It was the best choice for an interesting day of getting to know a little part of Tunisia, outside the resort. Out driver and guide, Yassine, was preoccupied to make us feel safe and welcomed. Safe driving, made sure to keep us less in the heat, good tips for smart shopping. He even adapted the songs playlist to match our preferences. Thank you for a nice trip!"

"It was a superbly organized excursion. Pick-up was on time, and we visited the sights individually and according to the weather. We had enough time to see everything and for photos. It was really, really great."

Doreen Germany

"Everything was simple and very effective. I booked the day before at the end of the day. Payment was simple via PayPal in my case, but there were many other options. The driver was very pleasant and knowledgeable. At 8:00 AM, he was ready at the hotel door. He was both driver and guide, making things easy and giving advice. He waited and was always in touch via WhatsApp. In short, 5 stars."

"A wonderful day, well organized by Chachia Tour... even before departure, they gathered information about our wishes, our family... with a live guide who knew our wishes... visits at our own pace according to our wishes. Lots of beautiful souvenirs and beautiful stories with our driver Habib, who made the day special for each of us. We leave with warm hearts and lots of beautiful memories... a huge thank you to Habib and Chachia for adapting perfectly to us and making this day a unique one."
