Best short-port itinerary
The port sits on the causeway about four kilometres from Carthage, and Sidi Bou Said is a few kilometres further up the same coast. Use that closeness to spend your hours at the sites, not on an elaborate transport plan.
For around four to five usable hours ashore, keep it simple: La Goulette → Carthage → Sidi Bou Said → back to the ship. That’s a realistic, unhurried version of the day.
With six to seven hours, you can reasonably add Tunis Medina, as long as you still have a comfortable buffer before all-aboard. With eight or more, there’s flexibility for lunch or one more stop, but resist overloading the schedule just because the time is technically there. On a cruise day a buffer is worth more than a fourth destination.
Carthage
Budget ninety minutes to two hours and pick highlights; you will not cover the whole site. The Antonine Baths and Byrsa Hill make a strong short visit on their own. Add the Punic Ports if Hannibal and Punic naval history are a priority for you ; they’re usually the first thing dropped when time is tight.
Sidi Bou Said
Allow around an hour to ninety minutes on a cruise stop. That’s enough for the main streets, the viewpoint over the Gulf of Tunis, and a quick café stop for mint tea. It is not enough to linger for hours, which is fine given everything else on the itinerary.
Private excursion or cruise-line excursion?
Both work; they suit different priorities.
| Cruise-line excursion | Private excursion | |
|---|---|---|
| Timing | Built around your ship’s schedule | You set the pace |
| Flexibility | Fixed stops, fixed group | Can prioritise archaeology, photography or free time |
| Pickup | From the ship | At the port, with a guide who explains the sites |
| Best for | First-timers who want zero logistics | Travellers with specific interests or a tight window |
| Where to book | Through your cruise line | Tunis Medina, Carthage, Sidi Bou Said shore excursion, from $469 per group of up to 10, 4.8/5 from 12 reviews; or see private options |
Cruise-line excursions are simplest because someone else has already done the return-time maths for you. A private shore excursion gives the best balance of flexibility, direct pickup at the port and a guide at the ruins, and lets you weight the day toward whatever you came for. The shore excursion above has only a dozen reviews so far, so read them before you book. Before booking any private tour, check that it accepts cruise passengers: at least one popular Tunis day tour does not.
Taxi, driver or TGM?
You have five ways to get from the ship to the sites: a taxi, a private driver, the TGM train, a private shore excursion or your cruise line’s own excursion. The last two are covered above.
- Taxi. Best for a short port call and door-to-door convenience, especially a simple transfer between the port and one destination. Agree the fare or use the meter before you set off.
- Private driver. Best if you want several Carthage archaeological sites plus Sidi Bou Said. Carthage’s sites are spread across a couple of kilometres, and a driver saves the walking and waiting between them.
- TGM train. Best for budget-minded independent travellers with plenty of time. The nearest station is La Goulette Neuve, from where the line runs on to the Carthage stops and Sidi Bou Said. Reaching the station from the terminal and walking at the other end both add to the rail time, and a return-to-ship deadline makes any extra navigation riskier than on a normal holiday day. The line has also had works on its Tunis end, including a five-day interruption between Tunis Marine and La Goulette in spring 2026, so check that it is running before you rely on it. Our guide to the TGM and taxis without a car lists the stops.
Return-to-ship planning
Use your ship’s all-aboard time, not its scheduled departure time, as your real deadline, because all-aboard is typically thirty to sixty minutes earlier, and missing it can mean missing the ship. Build in a meaningful return buffer, especially if you’re doing Carthage independently or by taxi, not on an organised excursion, and confirm in advance with the operator exactly where your private guide or driver will meet you at the port and where they will drop you back.
Frequently asked questions
How much time do I need for Carthage and Sidi Bou Said from a cruise stop?
Four to five hours ashore covers both comfortably: roughly two hours at Carthage, an hour to ninety minutes in Sidi Bou Said, and the rest in transfers and buffer. Less than that and you’ll want to pick one site instead of rushing both.
How far is La Goulette cruise port from Carthage and Sidi Bou Said?
About four kilometres to Carthage, with Sidi Bou Said a few kilometres further along the coast. A taxi or driver covers it quickly; the TGM from La Goulette Neuve is cheaper but adds the walk to the station and at each end.
Can I add Tunis Medina to a La Goulette shore excursion?
Yes, if you have six or more usable hours ashore. With less time, adding the Medina usually means shortchanging Carthage or Sidi Bou Said, with no room for a real third stop.
Is it safe to do Carthage and Sidi Bou Said independently from a cruise stop?
It’s possible for confident travellers with a generous time buffer, using taxis or the TGM train, but a booked excursion or private driver removes the biggest risk on a port day: running late because of traffic, a closed ticket gate or a longer walk than expected between Carthage’s fenced sites.
What happens if my excursion runs late getting back to the port?
An organised excursion sold as a shore excursion is generally built with your ship’s schedule in mind, which is a real advantage over independent travel. Even so, always confirm your own all-aboard time separately and build in a buffer, because no excursion company can hold the ship for you.
For most first-time cruise passengers, Carthage and Sidi Bou Said together are the safest and most rewarding core itinerary from La Goulette. Add Tunis Medina only when your usable shore time comfortably allows it. Check availability for your dates, or see every tour departing near Tunis compared side by side.
