Best Carthage Tours
The four main types of Carthage tour compared: archaeology only, Carthage with Sidi Bou Said, adding the Tunis Medina, or private. Plus how to tell a guide from a driver.

For most first-time visitors staying in Tunis, the best Carthage tour is a Carthage and Sidi Bou Said tour with a licensed guide and the site tickets included, and the Carthage and Sidi Bou Said Tour (4.9/5 from 76 reviews) is a strong example. If archaeology, convenience or seeing several Tunis highlights in one day matters more to you, a different type of tour fits better. Tours with near-identical titles can give the ruins anything from one hour to three, and that difference usually sits in the itinerary, not the headline.

Prices are the operators’ starting prices on GetYourGuide and can change with the date you pick. The times at Carthage come from each listing’s own itinerary.
Dedicated archaeology tour
Best for history lovers. When you compare listings, look for named sites such as Byrsa Hill, the Antonine Baths, the Punic ports, the Tophet, the Roman villas or the theatre. Vague wording such as “panoramic visit of Carthage” usually means a drive past the fences with one stop.
The Carthage walking tour is the clearest example. It spends three hours on foot across seven sites, from the Tophet and the Punic ports to the Roman villas, Byrsa Hill and the aqueduct, with a licensed guide and every site ticket included (our full breakdown). It meets at Salammbo station, which you reach on the TGM light rail from Tunis, and it skips Sidi Bou Said. The village is a few stops further up the same line if you want it afterwards.
Carthage + Sidi Bou Said
The best balance for most first-time visitors: historical depth at the ruins, followed by a relaxed stop in the blue-and-white village on the cliff above the Gulf of Tunis.
The Carthage and Sidi Bou Said Tour gives the ruins two and a half hours across six sites in chronological order, with a licensed guide and all Carthage tickets included, then an hour in Sidi Bou Said (our full breakdown). It starts at the Salammbo Tophet, so you make your own way there, and it finishes at Café des Délices if you want to stay on in the village. The half-day tour from Tunis costs more and collects you from your hotel, with the guide and entry fees included and a return by early afternoon.
Carthage + Sidi Bou Said + Tunis Medina
Best if you have only one full sightseeing day. Check the time allocation carefully, because a longer tour does not necessarily mean more time at Carthage. The eight-hour Hammamet coach tour with lunch gives Carthage one guided hour, then two hours each in Sidi Bou Said and the Medina. The Tunis VIP Private Day Trip allows about 90 minutes at the ruins. Both give Carthage less time than the four-hour half-day above.
What a three-stop day does give you is variety: Roman and Punic ruins, a clifftop village and the souks of a UNESCO-listed medina. The private Medina, Carthage and Sidi Bou Said day trip fits all three into about six hours, with entry to the sites and lunch in La Goulette included. At the budget end, the Carthage, Bardo Museum, Sidi Bou Said & Tunis Medina Tour starts at $16 for transport and hotel pickup in Tunis or Hammamet, with the guide, lunch and entry fees each sold as options. It adds the Bardo, which closes on Mondays. Our guide to doing all three in one day has a realistic time split.
Private tour
Best for families, groups and serious history enthusiasts. A private tour is valuable when you use the flexibility: spending longer at the Punic sites, cutting a Roman stop you do not need, or taking a break when the children have had enough. If a group itinerary already matches what you want, there is no need to pay more for the label.
The seven-hour private tour with a licensed guide costs $234 for up to three people, about $78 each, and adds the Bardo Museum (our full breakdown). The Tunis VIP Private Day Trip (4.7/5 from more than 800 reviews) and the VIP Private Tour of Tunis (4.9/5 from 159 reviews) are priced per person, and the rate falls as the group grows. Our private tours page compares the options.
Guide vs driver
A driver solves transport. A guide explains Carthage. Confirm which one is included before you pay a private-tour premium.
The distinction matters more here than at most sites. Carthage is two cities layered on top of each other, heavily ruined and thinly labelled, so the commentary is much of what you are paying for. Many private listings come with a driver-host who gives local tips and orientation. The Tunis VIP Private Day Trip lists a specialist history guide as an extra, and the VIP Private Tour of Tunis treats a licensed guide as a separate arrangement. The seven-hour private tour puts a licensed guide beside you for the whole day. If a listing only says “guide”, check the inclusions for the word “licensed”.
How to compare Carthage tours
Look past the number of stops and check four things on each listing:
- Time at Carthage, in hours, in the itinerary.
- Named archaeological sites, such as Byrsa Hill, the Antonine Baths, the Punic ports or the Tophet.
- A licensed guide, and not only a driver-host.
- The site pass. Several listings leave it out, and it costs 20 dinars for non-residents since April 2026, rising to 30 dinars in January 2027, paid in cash at the gate.
Those details matter more than the total number of stops. If you want the tours ranked by rating and review count instead, see our best Carthage and Sidi Bou Said tours page. The which tour is right for you guide works through the choice by where you are staying.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best Carthage tour for a first visit?
For most first-time visitors staying in Tunis, a Carthage and Sidi Bou Said tour with a licensed guide and the site tickets included. The Carthage and Sidi Bou Said Tour is rated 4.9/5 from 76 reviews and spends two and a half hours at the ruins before an hour in the village.
Which Carthage tour spends the most time at the ruins?
The Carthage walking tour spends three hours on foot across seven sites and skips Sidi Bou Said. The Carthage and Sidi Bou Said Tour gives the ruins two and a half hours and still includes the village.
Does a longer tour mean more time at Carthage?
No. Full-day tours that add the Tunis Medina often give Carthage one hour to an hour and a half, less than a four-hour half-day from Tunis. Check the itinerary for the time at each stop.
Do private Carthage tours include a guide?
Not always. Many private listings include a driver-host, and a licensed history guide is a separate arrangement. Read the inclusions for the word “licensed” before you pay a private-tour premium.
Is a private Carthage tour worth it?
It is when you will use the flexibility, for example to spend longer at the Punic sites, skip a stop or set your own pace with children. For three or four people, compare the private price per head with group tickets, because some private tours are priced per person and get cheaper as the group grows.
Are Carthage entry tickets included on tours?
On some. The walking tour, the Carthage and Sidi Bou Said Tour and the half-day tour from Tunis all include site entry. Many cheaper and private listings leave it out, so budget 20 dinars a head for the Carthage pass (30 dinars from January 2027).
Compare Carthage tours by the time they give the ruins, the sites they name and whether a real guide is included. When you have a shortlist, check availability for your dates.
