Carthage & the Medina of Tunis

Carthage and the Medina of Tunis were both inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979. Adding Sidi Bou Said makes a day that covers the Punic and Roman city, the Islamic old town and an Andalusian hill village — three distinct layers of Tunisian history within twenty kilometres of each other.

What the medina adds

The old city of Tunis is a dense warren of covered souks, workshops and courtyards centred on the Zitouna Mosque, whose minaret is the landmark you see from every rooftop terrace. Unlike Carthage it is a working place: the souks sell to residents as well as visitors, the alleys are busy, and the palaces converted into shops and restaurants are genuinely old rather than restored for the trade.

It is also where lunch happens on almost every itinerary, which is the practical reason it sits in the middle of the day.

Where the hour comes from

Adding a third stop has to cost time somewhere, and it is almost always Carthage that pays. A two-site day can give the ruins two hours; a three-site day gives them one, which buys a single enclosure. If you want the medina and a proper look at Carthage, you need a six-hour-plus itinerary or a private vehicle that removes the pickup circuit.

The order matters more than you would think

Most three-site itineraries run medina first, then Carthage, then Sidi Bou Said. That is the right order for two reasons. The souks are at their best in the morning before the heat, and finishing on a cliff terrace above the Gulf of Tunis is a better end to a day than finishing in a covered market.

It also means the ruins fall around midday, which is the one drawback. In July and August, ask about an earlier start — Carthage is open ground with almost no shade.

Several tours swap the medina for the Bardo Museum, or offer both as options. The Bardo holds the largest collection of Roman mosaics in the world, many of them lifted from the villas at Carthage and from Dougga.
