The Experience

Why This One Tops the Ranking

4.9 from 67 reviews, and the only tour here that gives Carthage two and a half hours.

Highlights

  • Two and a half hours at Carthage — six sites rather than one photo stop
  • Entry tickets to every Carthage site included in the price
  • The Tophet, the Punic ports, the Antonine Baths, the theatre and Byrsa Hill
  • A licensed guide running the day in chronological order
  • Drop-off at Café des Délices so you can stay on in Sidi Bou Said

What's Included

  • Professional licensed guide
  • Entry tickets to all Carthage sites
  • All fees and taxes

How the Best-Rated Day Works

From the Salammbo Tophet to a mint tea above the Gulf of Tunis.

  1. Pick Your Departure Point

Tours run from Tunis, Hammamet, Yasmine Hammamet, Sousse, Monastir and the La Goulette cruise terminal. The further out you start, the more of the day goes on the road — budget an hour each way from Hammamet, closer to two from Sousse.

  2. Get Collected at Your Hotel

Almost every operator here includes hotel pickup, and most send the exact time by WhatsApp the evening before. Cruise passengers are the exception — check the listing, because some tours refuse port pickups outright.

  3. Walk Carthage With a Guide

The ruins are spread across several fenced sites, so a guide and a vehicle save real time. Expect the Antonine Baths, Byrsa Hill and usually the Punic ports or the Tophet. Check whether the entry ticket is included — many listings leave it out.

  4. Finish in the Blue Village

Sidi Bou Said sits about ten minutes up the coast. Most tours give an hour or two of free time for the cobbled lanes, the studded blue doors and a mint tea with pine nuts on a terrace above the Gulf of Tunis.

How We Ranked Them

What 'Best' Means When Every Tour Visits the Same Two Places

Rating, review volume and time on site pull in different directions. Here is how they resolve.

Fourteen tours, all going to the same two places. Ranking them sounds simple until you look at the numbers, because the three signals that matter pull in opposite directions.

Rating and volume are not the same thing

The best-rated tour here sits at 4.9 from 67 reviews. The most-booked sits at 4.3 from nearly 1,300. Those are both good numbers and they mean different things.

A 4.9 across sixty-seven reviews tells you a small operation is doing careful work. A 4.3 across thirteen hundred tells you a large coach operation runs reliably at scale, absorbing the complaints about timing and group size that volume inevitably generates. Neither figure is better; they describe different products. What you should not do is read 4.3 as “worse than 4.9” without noticing that one number is twenty times more tested than the other.

Time on site is the signal nobody publishes

The third axis is the one no rating captures. Carthage is seven fenced enclosures spread across two kilometres of suburb, and a tour’s itinerary decides how many of them you get inside.

A combined day tour gives Carthage an hour, which buys one enclosure and the parking. The tour featured on this page gives it two and a half, working through the Tophet, the Punic ports, the Antonine Baths, the theatre, the amphitheatre, the cisterns and Byrsa Hill in the order they were built. Same destination, different visit.

That is why it tops this ranking rather than the tour with twenty times the reviews.

The trade it asks of you

The top-rated option does not include hotel pickup. It starts at the Salammbo Tophet, and you make your own way out — half an hour on the TGM commuter train from Tunis Marine, for well under a dinar. If you are staying in Tunis that is trivial. If you are at a resort in Hammamet or Sousse it is not, and the ranking changes completely: see the Hammamet departures and Sousse departures pages instead.

It also includes every Carthage site ticket, which is worth about 30 dinars a head and is excluded from most of the cheaper listings. Add that back before comparing prices.

The rest of the ranking

Second is the VIP private day trip, at 4.9 from 112 reviews, priced per person and falling as the group grows. Third is the seven-hour private tour with a licensed guide at 4.9 from 102, which is the only listing here with an accredited guide beside you all day.

For the cheapest way into the same itinerary, the eight-hour four-site tour starts at $17 with hotel pickup included, and rates 4.6 across 165 reviews. Our guide to choosing works through each pick in detail.

"Moises was a great guide. I really enjoyed the tour, it's great having an option in Spanish."

Basilio Honduras

"A superb tour of Carthage and Sidi Bou. Moise is a passionate and engaging live guide who shares some anecdotes as well as great places to visit in the city. I highly recommend this activity as the history of Carthage is so rich."

Antoine France

"We were able to see a lot of sites in Carthage by coach, and it was very pleasant. For Sidi Bou Said too, it saved us from having to climb in the heat. We learned a lot with Moises, who is super friendly and offers a very immersive tour. I recommend it!"

Benoît France

"I had the chance to visit Carthage and Sidi Bou Said with Moises, and I have great memories of it. Passionate, knowledgeable, and very professional, he made each visit lively and exciting with his clear explanations, rich in anecdotes, and perfectly adapted to my pace. His knowledge of the history of Tunisia, Carthage, and the local heritage is remarkable. He was also very attentive, available, and very kind throughout the excursion. Thanks to him, I discovered much more than just tourist sites: I gained a better understanding of the history, culture, and soul of these beautiful places. I would recommend Moises without the slightest hesitation to anyone wishing to discover Carthage and Sidi Bou Said in the best possible way. Thank you very much for this enriching and memorable experience! Saïdat"

Inssa France

"I booked a few days ago and, following a cancellation, I was lucky enough to have live guide Moïses just for me. A native of the region, he loves it and knows how to talk about it (in several languages) with enthusiasm and precision. He knows everyone and is rightly appreciated. This allows access to unusual and unique places. He listens to your expectations, and this made the tour very enjoyable by combining the culture of the Carthaginian sites with the charm of the beautiful white and blue city of Sidi Bou Said. Plus, there weren't too many people! A must."

VELIKONIA France

"A magnificent tour with our guide Moises, a man full of knowledge and warmth. Not only did we learn about the history and symbolism of Carthage and Sidi Bou Said, but we also had some fun. We visited beautiful places full of history. Moises is an excellent professional and a very approachable person."

Belén Santa Tunisia

"We took a sightseeing tour of Tunisia that included Carthage and Sidi Bou Said, and it was a highly recommended experience. We loved the combination of history and landscapes. Carthage is impressive if you're interested in history, and Sidi Bou Said is beautiful, with its blue and white houses and incredible views. Our tour guide, Moisés, was lovely. He explained a lot of things to us throughout the tour, always in a clear and enjoyable way, and he also speaks Spanish very well, which made the experience even better. He also had the thoughtfulness to take us to our boat at the end of the sightseeing tour, which we really appreciated. The organization was good, and everything went according to plan. Without a doubt, if we go back to Tunisia, we would contact him again to be our tour guide. Highly recommended."

GetYourGuide traveler

"The tour was very good... In the morning, we did a free tour with Moises, and when we finished, since we had this tour with him, he offered to take us to our tour in Carthage. On the way, we stopped for lunch at a local restaurant where we had a good lunch and paid 20 TND (6 euros). Then we started the tour of Carthage… we made 4 stops along the way and we were even able to visit a mosque inside, which would have been impossible to visit on our own. In the village of Sidi Bou Said, we drove up to the most touristy area, and there we had a very comfortable visit. Both Omar and Moises treated us great and recommended restaurants and alternative activities to do during our time in Tunisia. They also told us about a very inexpensive way to return from La Goulette in a very comfortable shared taxi, for which we paid only 2 TND per person. Highly recommended agency."
